We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to be interviewed by the Helena Independent Record about our 3-part philosophy symposium series on the environment, ethics & stewardship, the first of which will take place on Sept. 20th 2018 and will focus on philosophical issues and perspectives related to public vs. private lands & rights and responsibilities.
The symposium series is funded in part by Humanities Montana and the Philosophy Learning and Teaching Organization, and by in-kind sponsorship from Carroll College, Helena Civic Television, and BWP Helena Great Northern Hotel.
Attendees can anticipate presentations and Q & A opportunities with panelists Shane M. Doyle, independent educational and cultural consultant with Native Nexus Consulting; Shiloh Hernandez, attorney with Western Environmental Law Center; Harvey Locke, co-founder of Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative & Nature Needs Half; Bill Parsons associate professor of political science at Carroll College; Mark Smillie, professor of philosophy at Carroll College; and Bill Milton rancher with Milton Ranch LLC.
The environment, ethics & stewardship hold a very special place in my heart. We, as humans, are not separate from nature but part of it…one of many species taking part in the dance. And, I think, as philosophers, if we are to take the Delphic maxim to “know thyself” seriously, then we must also take nature seriously. Our symposium (as well as the next two symposia in our series) is an attempt to honor this imperative – to help us better understand ourselves, the world in which we live, the relationships and things at stake, and what this might mean relative to how we might or ought to navigate our lives. — Marisa Diaz-Waian
