In addition to enjoying a stunning Fall day (thank you Mother Nature!), we had a blast exploring the terrain and talking about imagination & storytelling on our Halloween-Themed Philosophy Walk for Kids! Thank you so much to the amazing group of kids (and adults) who participated in the meandering and fun.
Adorned in costumes ranging from a woodland fairy and a bumblebee to a vampire and more, our little philosopher’s (and parents) piled into our hayride wagon. From there…it was onward bound to Merlin Nature Preserve!
Once on the preserve we made a stop at Deadman’s Gulch (for a tale about Cleetus & Clyde – the night owl miner brothers). Then we set out on foot to the Miner’s Shack (where we talked about the importance of imagination to philosophical and scientific thinking).
After that…we journeyed on to the “haunted homestead” and enjoyed tasty cookies and homemade apple cider whilst listening to the awesome theatrical stylings of Martin Richard and the tale of golden arm. Woven into the days events were questions such as:
- Why are kids such great natural philosophers?
- How is being in nature good for the body & mind?
- Why and how is imagination important to philosophical and other kinds of thinking?
- How might imagination & storytelling be important to other activities and ways of being/understanding the world?
Special thank you’s to our delightful guest storyteller, Martin Richard, and our Hayride Wagon Driver Extraordinaire, David Whedbee (aka The Ninja Wizard). Thank you also to T.J. & Victor for donating hay for our hayride wagon, to Sarah Elkins & Bob Schmitt for donating the tasty organic apples that went in to our homemade apple cider, and to Amanda & Jake for open up the coffee cabin for our group before the walk!
